The Government Solutions Division of Black Box Network Services is an information systems integrator that designs, implements and maintains telecommunications and data solutions for Federal customers worldwide.

Black Box is seeking a qualified Telecommunications Network Engineer in the Amherst, VA Network Operations Center (NOC).  The ability to telecommute is a possibility for the right candidate.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The Telecommunications Network Engineer will provide design, installation and support services to Black Box customers during the implementation of unified communications, video, data, security and wireless solutions worldwide.

Principle duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Survey, design, install, configure, harden and test various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS)
  • Contribute to project planning and participate in all project phases (requirement definition, implementation and configuration, user acceptance testing)
  • Assess and document current network configurations.  Interpret and create topography, network design drawings and blueprints documenting configuration changes at project locations. 
  • Evaluate potential solutions and systems architecture to ensure that they meet all client requirements.
  • Support preparation of engineering plans and site installation technical design packages.
  • Lead and/or participate in meetings with internal teams, customers, and vendors to review requirements, address open issues/questions, close gaps.
  • Closely coordinate with other information system professionals to ensure proper implementation of network services.
  • Utilize monitoring, performance analysis, network management, software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and diagnose problems, gauge network performance, and trace data and protocol activity. 
  • Plan, develop, finalize, and review key deliverables in each stage of the project life cycle.
  • Perform writing responsibilities for technical design and methodology for proposal volumes, white papers and project deliverables as necessary.
  • Maintain technical expertise by staying abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends and Federal Agency and Department of Defense standards, directives and policies.


Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Prior hands-on experience designing, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting complex networks within Federal Agency and Department of Defense environments, including working with multiple vendors such as Cisco, Brocade, HP, Juniper, VMWare etc... using commercial and open source tools such as SolarWinds, Wireshark, Splunk, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of Storage Area Network (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS), Data Center, Virtualization, Data Networking and Unified Communications design.
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of Software Defined Networking (SDN), virtual switches, routers and firewalls, and SDN solutions offered by leading vendors.
  • Experience with server and desktop virtualization. Ability to install, configure, and manage VMware vSphere environment: vCenter, hypervisor on new hosts, virtual machines, datastore creation and maintenance.
  • General understanding and experience with various operating systems including Windows and various Linux distributions. Prior experience with Linux scripting and implementation a plus.
  • Knowledge of RESTful Web Services, XML, JSON.
  • Experience with current DoD Information Assurance and Risk Management Framework (RMF) policies, procedures, and techniques.
  • Experience with DISA Security Technical Information Guides (STIGs) is a plus Experience with Nessus Scanner (ACAS) and Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP).
  • Desired Certifications:  CCIE (Collaboration, Routing & Switching or Data Center), CCDP, BPIPA, VCP, Red Hat, OpenStack, MCSE or equivalent.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience in design, implementation and analysis of voice networks, LAN and WAN data networks, wireless networks, and/or network management systems to support voice and data services.
  • CCNP Collaboration, Routing & Switching or Data Center
  • Must have experience implementing and troubleshooting Enhanced Interior Gateway Router Protocol (EIGRP), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP), Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF), Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC), Spanning-Tree, Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP), Performance Routing, Multicast, Virtual Storage Platform (VSP), Media Access Control Security (MACsec), Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Quality of Service (QoS), Policing/Shaping, Dual-Stack, and or Internet Protocol Version 4/Version 6 (IPV4/IPV6).
  • Knowledge of VPNs, firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention hardware.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring and management systems, such as CA Spectrum, Brocade IronView, CiscoWorks, HP OpenView, Sniffer, etc.
  • Experience with route tables, access control lists, NAT, SNMP, HTTP, DHCP, DNS, WINS, RADIUS, and TACAS+.
  • Work experience with information and application security, including public key encryption, SSH, access credentials and X.509 certificates.
  • The ability to obtain an Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II certification as listed in the current version of DoDD 8570.01-M within two (2) months of hire date.  IAT Level II certifications include:
    • Cyber Security Essentials Certification (GSEC)
    • CompTIA Security+
    • Cisco CCNA Security
    • Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP)
  • Must have proven ability to utilize standard Microsoft tools (Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to produce technical documentation, including proposals, white papers, technical reports, and briefings for a variety of audiences with technical knowledge ranging from novice/user-level to advanced/engineering- level.
  • Must work well under pressure and time constrained environment with the ability to successfully manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Must be willing to travel In the Continental United States (CONUS) or Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) for extended periods of time.
  • Candidates must meet criteria to pass a background check and obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • A valid United States (US) driver’s license.
  • Must be a US Citizen
