    Duties:

    The SONET/DWDM Technician will report directly to the Site Manager and the following duties are typical but not-all inclusive:

    • Responsible for the advanced installation, operation, and maintenance of all transport equipment associated with the telecommunications infrastructure at the site. This includes Ciena, Alcatel Lucent nodes as well as 2-wire, 4-wire and point-to-point circuits, T-1, channel banks, channel service units (CSU), digital service units (DSU) and other circuits.
    • Configure, Install, Service and Maintain core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment necessary for the delivery of Metro Transport. This includes all equipment, both active and passive, between the core network and customer-facing ports.
    • Test and validate all new switch and router hardware and connections for proper configuration and performance. Ensure all fibers, cables and other connections are properly tagged and identified and that these connections have the proper physical support such as fiber duct, spiral wrap and strand relief supports. Ensure all equipment is mounted in such a way as to ensure network reliability.
    • Document that all equipment alarm points are being properly monitored and circuit design records are complete and accurate. This includes both creating circuit design records when needed as well as ensuring they are updated for an as-built or service restoration changes.
    • Assist with the installation, service and maintenance of customer premise equipment and last mile fiber circuits as necessary and directed.
    • As part of an on-call/standby rotation, respond to after-hours call-out for service restoration, troubleshooting, network testing and repair of all last core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment necessary for the delivery of Metro Transport.
    • Also assist OEM Network Engineers in troubleshooting, testing and repair of all core switches, routers, SONET Transport, DWDM and other related equipment as
      necessary and directed.
    • Participate in the creation and review of event Post Mortem documentation to ensure accurate and meaningful Post Mortem is created. Review all Post Mortem documents and implement procedures to minimize future service outages and shorten the duration.
    • Maintain all spare stock for all core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment necessary. Track all equipment RMAs and ensure the proper levels of spares inventory is maintained.
    • Perform scheduled maintenance on all core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment such as software upgrades

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Minimum Associates degree, 2 year technical degree, relevant military experience, equivalent special electronics training, or equivalent work experience is required.
    • Minimum 5 years experience plus electronics training on the Ciena OM3500, Ciena OM5200, Ciena OME6500 SONET and DWDM nodes as well as Alcatel Newbridge Mainstreet 3600 series Multiplexers. Experience in LAN/WAN operations and TCP/IP is a must.
    • Ciena and Newbridge training and certifications for support of the Ciena OM3500, Ciena OM5200, Ciena OME6500 SONET and DWDM nodes as well as Alcatel Newbridge Mainstreet 3600 series Multiplexers
    • Ciena OM3500/OM5200/OME6500 system line-up and testing (SLAT)
    • Ciena OM3500/OM5200/OME6500 Operations and Maintenance
    • Lucent 5620 NMS Administrator
    • Demonstrated extensive and varied working experience (Five [5] + years) with Ciena and Alcatel Lucent systems.
    • Demonstrated ability to determine, evaluate and diagnose call routing and performance and to recommend and implement solutions.
    • SONET/DWDM experience.
    • Experienced and knowledgeable in network troubleshooting techniques. Thorough understanding of SONET/TDM/DWDM  circuit operations, including test access,  circuit testing, line coding and framing of  DS1's, DS3's, OC3's, OC12's, OC48', OC192's, 1G, 10G and 40G.
    • Must be able to efficiently operate such test equipment such as optical power meters, OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzers, and SONET, T1 and DS3.
    • The Transport Technician is expected to perform his/her duties with minimum supervision, and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled.

    • Capable of working effectively with co-workers and fulfill customer requests.
    • Has strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite experience
    • Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
    • Ability to work extremely flexible hours and support on-call duties and shift work may be required.
    • Ability to concisely and effectively communicate and present complex technical information to a varied audience, including technical and non-technical customer representatives.
    • Is an effective time manager, allowing for involvement in special task order projects as assigned by the Site Manager.
    • Fostering of excellent relations with the Customer and the Team on behalf of Tyto Athene.
    • Ability to follow established guidelines set forth by the Customer, Tyto Athene, and the supervisor for conduct and work performance.
    • Ability to isolate system problems and malfunctions; take timely corrective action to meet conditions of Tyto Athene contract.
    • A valid driver’s license is required.
    • The ability to pass a background check and obtain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
    • Must be a US citizen.
